Aboriginal education

At Wairoa School, we are dedicated to honouring and celebrating Aboriginal culture, history, and perspectives as a vital part of our school community. We actively engage with local Aboriginal artists and community members, including collaborating with Jordan Ardler to create a meaningful artwork representing our local area. Our students collaborated in the creation of a vibrant artwork mural proudly displayed at the heart of our school. We have been facilitating termly yarning circles with the support of Aunty Calita Murray and Aunty Karen Armstrong. In 2025, we had our very first smoking ceremony supported by our local community.

We enrich our curriculum and school life through the use of our Aboriginal Artefact kit, engaging and exposing students to storytelling through song and dance and the creation of an Acknowledgement of Country video made with student participation. Additionally, we provide a range of resources and activities that support Aboriginal education teaching and learning, ensuring all students develop respect, understanding, and appreciation for Aboriginal heritage and history.

At Wairoa School, we walk together in unity and respect, committed to building a culturally inclusive environment where every student can thrive.
