Each year Wairoa School hosts a number of overseas students, for a period of 3 to 6 months who are at the final stages of their studies. Students come from several countries including Denmark, The Netherlands, Germany and USA and have backgrounds in special education, social work or psychology.
Staff at Wairoa mentor these trainees and support them regarding special education and catering for the needs of our students and our trainees make a great contribution to the corporate life of the school. Placement at Wairoa also provides an opportunity for trainees to develop their awareness of another culture, develop their language skills and independence.
Here are some thoughts from some of our most recent trainees:
"I'm a student from the Netherlands and I did my internship at Wairoa Special School in Sydney!
I'm studying SPH; Social Pedagogical Assistance and I think that it's a great opportunity to do your internship abroad! Wairoa School is really great! The teachers and children are so nice! Also the way that the teachers work with the children is great and there's a amazing atmosphere at Wairoa!!
I just want to say; Take that change to go overseas and discover the skills that Wairoa offers!
And from two student teachers from Germany:
I learned many things about how to work with children with disabilities and I still miss some of the children!
It was an unforgettable experience and it is certainly going to make me a better child psychologist."
